It is home to the immense collection of paintings and sculptures amassed by the Catholic Church throughout centuries, mostly well known for its Roman sculptures and world famous masterpieces of Renaissance period. The museum was founded in the early 16th century by Pope Julius II and it one of the largest and most visited art museums in the world.

Walking on the Bramante Staircase in the Vatican Museums will give you a fun experience with a lovely photo. The staircase consists of two intertwined spirals looking like the DNA. Don't forget to look up, when you are on the stair. The glass-domed ceiling is breathtaking!

What you must see in Vatican Museum...
Vatican museum is particularly famous for its rich collection of Italian renaissance works: Renaissance is generally described as taking place from the 14th century to 17th century. Renaissance was a period of revivial and creativity. It encouraged people to explore the world and see the world differently. Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo are some of the most famous Renaissance painters.
- The Transfiguration (1518-20), Raphael and Sebastiano del Piombo. – It was said to be the most famous oil painting in the world, from the late 16th century until the early 20th century.
- Laocoön and His Sons (1506), Agesander of Rhodes, Athanadoros, Polydorus of Rhodes, Athenodoros of Rhodes – One of the most renowned ancient sculptures ever since it was excavated in Rome in 1506. The figures are near life size, showing the Trojan priest Laocoön and his sons being attacked by the sea serpents.
- The School of Athens (1509–1511), Raphael -This artwork of Fresco painting has long been told as Raphael’s masterpiece, with its accurate perspective projection and the flawless embodiment of the classical spirit of the Renaissance.
- The Creation of Adam (1508 – 1512), Michelangelo – The painting shows some hallmarks of Michelangelo’s painting style, the lounging position of both Adam and God, coming across as works of sculpture. It has become one of the most replicated religious paintings of all time.
- Apollo Belvedere (AD 120–140), Leochares – The statue was immediately appreciated as a masterpiece and showered with praise when discovered near Rome in the late fifteenth century.
- Sistine Chapel Ceiling (1508 -1512) – The complex painting shows a number of sets of individual figures, both clothed and nude, allowing Michelangelo to fully demonstrate his skill in creating a huge variety of poses for the human figure.

Can I bring large bags to the museums?
You are not allowed to carry large bags. You may leave it in the cloakroom located near the museum entrance.
The tour finish at St Peter’s Basilica, 20 minute walk from the entrance.
So, we recommend not bringing items that have to be left in the cloackroom.
Best time to visit Vatican museums...
If you enter at 9:00, which is the opening time, you can watch in a relaxed. The average viewing time is about 3 hours.
* Let’s avoid Saturday morning ! That time is the most visited time.
