Why you should visit Accademia Gallery

There were four greatest renaissance artists in Italy; Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo. 

Accademia Gallery is well-known place to see the sculptures by Michelangelo. For instance, the original statue of David. David originally placed in Palazzo della Signoria. And it moved to Accademia Gallery to prevent any contamination in 1873.

About Michelangelo

Michelangelo

Michelangelo Buonarroti was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect and poet.

He was born in the Republic of Florence.

He sculpted two of his best-known works such as the Pietà and David. And surprisingly, it was before the age of thirty.

Also, he created two of the most influential frescoes in the history of Western art.

The scenes from Genesis on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome, and The Last Judgment on its altar wall.

Generally, he was a respectful artist among the people. In his lifetime, Michelangelo was often called Il Divino as the meaning of “the divine one”

What you must see in Accademia Gallery

David

Michelangelo’s carved the David from a giant block of Carrara marble in three years only from 1501 to 1504.

In addition he was creating an imposing sculpture of absolute beauty as an icon of the renaissance model.

Moreover, he depicted a magnificent nude young man at the height of his physical vigour whose intense expression of strength and courage.

This originated from absolute faith in God, moreover the roses as a symbol of power and invincibility of the Florentine Republic at the time of its maximum splendour.

The height is 5.17 metres (17.0 ft). Besides the marble statue of the Biblical figure David as a favoured subject in the art of Florence.

  • It was just 26 years old when Michelangelo carved David in 1501
  • David is carved from a single block of Carrara marble
  • The tree trunk behind David’s leg protects the statue

I Prigioni

The Young Slave (Italian: Schiavo Giovane) is datable to around 1525–1530.

It is part of the “unfinished” series of Prigioni intended for the Tomb of Julius II.

San Matteo

San Matteo(St. Matthew) depicts Matthew the Apostle. 

In addition, the sculpture intends for a series of 12 apostles for the choir niches of the Florence Cathedral.

But it left unfinished in 1506 when Michelangelo moved to Rome to work for Pope Julius II.

Palestrina Pietà

Even though Michelangelo started the work, but now the other sculptors finished the work.

And this Pietà depicts three figures, one of them is the body of Jesus Christ.

Opening time of Accademia Gallery

Opening hours: from Tuesday to Sunday, from 8,15 am to 6,50 pm. Last entrance time 4:45 pm.

Closing: Mondays, 1st January, 1st May and Christmas day.

The Accademia Gallery allows people to enter every 15 minutes.

FREE admission The first Sunday of every month is “Sunday at the Museum” day. 

– The free admission cannot be booked online for equal opportunity.

Other things to know about Accademia

The Museum doesn’t have a cloakroom, thus, entrance is not allowed to visitors with large bags, backpack, helmets, etc.

Toilets are available ONLY at the end of the visit itinerary.

Water bottles are allowed if not exceeding 0.5 l.
